ASSOCIATION OF HIGHLY SENSITIVE C-REACTIVE PROTEIN WITH DEGREES OF OVERWEIGHT AND INSULIN RESISTANCE AMONG FILIPINO ADOLOSCENTS

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND: THE PREVALENCE OF OBESITY AND ITS ASSOCIATED METABOLIC ABNORMALITIES IN CHILDREN ARE INCREASING WORLDWIDE. THESE CHILDREN ARE AT RISK FOR DEVELOPING CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES EVEN AS YOUNG ADULTS. STUDIES HAVE DOCUMENTED THAT DYSLIPIDEMIA, HYPERTENSION, INSULIN RESISTANCE AND TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS ARE ALREADY PRESENT IN OVERWEIGHT CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS. THESE RISK FACTORS HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH ELEVATED INFLAMMATORY MARKERS SUCH AS THE HIGHLY SENSITIVE C REACTIVE PROTEIN (hsCRP) WHICH IS AN INDICATOR OF ENDOTHELIAL DYSFUNCTION, KNOWN TO PLAY A PIVOTAL ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ATHEROSCLEROSIS. TO DATE, NO LOCAL STUDY HAS BEEN DONE TO INVESTIGATE THESE RELATIONSHIPS.
OBJECTIVES: THIS STUDY AIMS TO DETERMINE THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN DEGREES OF OVERWEIGHT AND hsCRP AND THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN INSULIN RESISTANCE AND hs CRP. IT ALSO AIMS TO LOOK AT THE PREVALENCE OF HYPERTENSION, DYSLIPIDEMIA, HYPERTENSION, INSULIN RESISTANCE, ELEVATED WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE AND LEVELS OF hsCRP AMONG OVERWEIGHT ADOLESCENTS.
METHODS: OVERWEIGHT ADOLESCENTS WITH BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) GREATER THAN 85TH PERCENTILE FOR AGE AND SEX WERE INCLUDED IN THE STUDY AND WERE CLASSIFIED INTO CATEGORIES OF RISK OVERWEIGHT (ROW, BMI=85TH PERCENTILE TO LESS THAN 95TH PERCENTILE) AND OVERWEIGHT (OVW, GREATER THAN 95TH PERCENTILE). BLOOD PRESSURE AND WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE WERE ALSO DETERMINED. BLOOD WAS EXTRACTED FOR LIPID LEVELS, FASTING BLOOD SUGAR, FASTING INSULIN AND hsCRP. FAMILY HISTORY OF DIABETES WAS ELICITED. LOGISTIC REGRESSION WAS USED TO ANALYZE THE ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN THE VARIABLES.
